  • Abstract
In the paper, the author put together many hypotheses and theories concerning the causes of forest decline on great areas. The source materials for this paper were gathered by the author during his scientific training in the Federal Republic of Germany, as holder of the UNDP/FAO scholarship. Following hypotheses are presented: infection, drought, SO2-immission, ozone, deficiency of Mg and Ca, acid precipitation, silvicultural errors and stress. The author also tried to explain mechanisms of the influence of individual stressing agents on the trees and ecosystems and presented more interesting bibliography from the last several years concerning the problems of forest decline.
